Butterscotch Sauce
Ingredients :
- brown sugar - 1/2 cup*
- unsalted butter - 4 tbs
- fresh cream - 1/2 cup
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- vanilla essence - a few drops
Method
- add butter into a saucepan
- melt it on low medium heat
- add in sugar and stir well
- add in the cream
- bring to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes
- turn off the heat and stir in vanilla and salt
- transfer into a container to cool
- you can store it in refrigerator up to 2 weeks
Notes :
- we may confuse between butterscotch sauce and caramel sauce
- caramel sauce is made with white refined sugar whereas butterscotch sauce is made with brown sugar
- the process of making both are almost similar, but taste wise both are different
- butterscotch sauce is sweeter than caramel sauce
- brown sugar is of two types :- light brown sugar and dark brown sugar, the presence of molasses gives them the distinctive colour and taste
- for this recipe I used light brown sugar, but you can use dark brown sugar as well
- butterscotch thickens as it sits, so do not over - boil the sauce
- you can decide the consistency of the sauce
